None of this would have been possible without the client trusting Amy with this highly sensitive IPV disclosure.
Amy is a nurse home visitor with the Nurse-Family Partnership at Denver Health and I have the privilege of being her supervisor. Amy is a spectacular nurse who takes excellent care of the first-time moms in our program. The particular actions she took for one mom are why I am nominating her today.
Amy enrolled this mom and her very premature (28 weeks gestation) baby while in the NICU. During the early visits with the client, Amy suspected the client was experiencing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). With compassionate assessment and skill, the client disclosed to Amy that she was in fact experiencing IPV and was making plans to flee out of state for family support. Amy sprang into action contacting all necessary parties (pediatrician, social worker, client PCP) to get oxygen set up for the baby's car ride and a transition of care.
Additionally, with Amy's help in care coordination and alerting the pediatrician, a needed surgery for the baby was scheduled and completed urgently in time for the client's scheduled departure date. With Amy's help, the client was able to safely leave her abusive relationship while getting the medical needs of her baby met. Amy attempted to transfer the client to an NFP program, but there was no site available in her area. Undeterred, Amy found a different nurse home visiting program that could serve the client. The only problem was they only had a couple of weeks to get the client enrolled before their enrollment deadline would make the client ineligible.
Amy facilitated a connection between the program and the client and a scheduled enrollment visit was made in time! None of this would have been possible without the client trusting Amy with this highly sensitive IPV disclosure. Amy’s respect for the client’s bravery and safety situation inspired Amy’s methodical coordination to ensure this fast departure! I am so proud of the excellence that Amy demonstrated in providing such timely and empathetic care to this young mother. She undoubtedly had a positive impact on this client far beyond what we may ever truly know.
