Ana showed her support and empathy to me and made my first code a lot less scary.
Ana went out of her way to help me process something pretty difficult. As a new nurse, codes are scary, and especially so if it’s your patient! Ana and I were working together in a clinic when my patient lost consciousness and a pulse. After CPR the patient went to the hospital for further treatment and ended up surviving the events.
After the situation had settled down that day, Ana took the time to go for a walk with me to process what had happened. She made sure to tell me that this wasn’t my fault that I didn’t do anything wrong and also explained what most likely happened. I felt much calmer after our walk and was able to continue my shift comfortably.
Not all nurses take the time to help new nurses process difficult situations and learn from them. Ana showed her support and empathy to me and made my first code a lot less scary. She truly cares about helping her team and doesn’t forget that nurses can be patients too!
