Recently, I noticed Ana coming into work on her day off. She had just finished a 3-day stressful stretch, so I was worried maybe she forgot something during this busy time. Instead, I noted she had bags in her hands, and she stated she was "coming to visit my grandpa." This was not her actual Grandpa but a patient she made a connection with during her leadership rounds. I went into the room to listen and noticed she had set him up with a meal she brought from home. During her leader rounds they spoke of his time as a child with his father being in the military and how much he enjoyed Philippino food. He mentioned to Ana Mae that the closest restaurant was 16 miles away and he was unable to make that trip. Ana then took it upon herself to complete an entire meal of his favorites and bring it to him on her first day off. He mentioned he had not had that meal in 45 years, and it brought him back. This is a shining example of how Ana Mae practices each day, she is frequently noted to feed the staff on PCU, coming in extra and making sure her "family" here is taking care of. Ana is a wonderful example of the petals of the DAISY and PCU is lucky to have such a kind, empathetic, caring, selfless nurse who values the needs of others.
