Andre went above and beyond to make my mother's stay in the critical care unit as comfortable as possible. My mother has advanced Alzheimer’s, and she was not the easiest charge, but he was always kind and patient, treated her with dignity, and was constantly looking for ways to improve her quality of life. He spent time getting to know my mother and learning who she is, who she was, and who each visitor was to her. When he noted that she was getting fidgety, he got her a bear from volunteer services. She is now in the med-surg unit and is still hugging and kissing that bear for comfort. He also worked really hard to keep my whole family informed. My mother felt his kindness, and when he was around, she was calmer and more responsive. Andre ran into me at the hospital yesterday and asked how my mother is doing. Even though she is not his responsibility, he really cares. It is very hard to have a parent in the hospital who cannot articulate anything about her condition, but when Andre was her nurse, I knew that she was getting a high quality of care, and that she was spending time with a high-quality person.
