Ms. Bizzle got the patient all set for his blood transfusion to take place in the Infusion Clinic after his iron infusion was completed.
Recently, a patient was scheduled for iron infusion and to see his Primary Care Provider (PCP). The patient’s hemoglobin on this particular morning was 6.7; he was complaining of shortness of breath and said he was cold. He went on to say that he felt he needed a blood transfusion and was told by his PCP that he should go to the Emergency Department (ED) for a blood transfusion after he received his iron infusion. Ms. Bizzle immediately contacted the hematology doctor. The doctor came, assessed the patient, and ordered a type & screen and blood transfusion. Ms. Bizzle accompanied the patient to the ED, got him an armband, took him to the lab to get a lab tube and blood bank number, and then typed & screened. She used the IV line that she had started so the patient would not need to be stuck multiple times. In a nutshell, Ms. Bizzle got the patient all set for his blood transfusion to take place in the Infusion Clinic after his iron infusion was completed. The patient was so appreciative and stated he would have had to have stayed at the ED all day and night if it was not for Ms. Bizzle going above and beyond providing care.
