My mother was admitted to the ICU at El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos with end stage heart failure. She spent one week there before transitioning home with hospice, and she passed peacefully two days later with her family at her side. This was exactly what she wanted.
The compassion and skill of the ICU team made it possible for her to have the end-of-life experience she hoped for.
Throughout that week, the ICU staff cared not only for my mother but also for our entire family. Their presence, communication, and kindness supported us through an incredibly difficult time.Among this exceptional team, one nurse stood out in a way I will never forget: Andrea.
On the day of my mother’s discharge, Andrea cared for her with remarkable attention, tenderness, and respect. She explained every step of her care, spoke to us with patience and clarity, and created a sense of safety and sacredness in the room. She understood how important it was for my mother to go home, and she made sure our family was included when the team rounded on her. She coordinated closely with the palliative care team so we could discuss goals of care and finalize the discharge plan. Because of Andrea’s skill and advocacy, the team was able to wean my mother off her drip, stabilize her on nasal cannula, and arrange transportation home within just a few hours. Her calm presence and steady guidance made an overwhelming day feel manageable and meaningful.
There is one gesture I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Before we left, Andrea printed my mother’s ECG strip, placed it in a small glass vial, and gave it to me as a keepsake. It was the most thoughtful and beautiful gift I have ever received. In that moment, I knew without any doubt that Andrea was not only my mother’s angel and protector but also mine.
Andrea represents the spirit of the DAISY Award in every way. She combines clinical excellence with deep compassion and a profound understanding of what family’s need during life’s most vulnerable moments. I hope she is recognized for the extraordinary care she provided to my mother and to all of us.
Thank you, Andrea, from the bottom of my heart.
