While working a night shift, Andi Evans noticed a fellow coworker was not acting like herself. She gently pulled her aside and asked if she was okay. The coworker broke down, sharing that she was at the end of her rope and had been seriously considering suicide.

Andi immediately offered comfort, hugged her, and sat with her to talk. She encouraged her to seek help in the ER, but the coworker initially resisted. After further conversation, the coworker admitted she could not promise she wouldn’t harm herself if she went home.

Andi, deeply concerned for her safety, calmly but firmly ensured she did not leave and supported her through checking into the ER, where suicide precautions were initiated.

The coworker did not want to call her husband and asked Andi to do so, along with her mother. With permission, Andi contacted both, explained the situation, and ensured they came to the ER to be with her. Andi does not normally work night shifts—she had volunteered because no one else could. It truly felt meant to be that she was there that night.

Her actions went far beyond her duties as a nurse; she cared for a colleague with the same compassion and commitment we give to our patients.

Andi’s vigilance and kindness may have saved a life, and she exemplifies what nursing is all about.

Thank you, Andrea, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
