I would like to recognize Andrea Fala, whose compassion and excellent nursing skills made a significant difference in my mom's end of life. Andrea easily extended kindness and empathy to my brother, husband, and me as well.
Mom was admitted to the Neuro wing late in the evening after suffering a stroke. Andrea patiently listened to me explain the medications Mom had taken that morning and what medications she would still need to take that night. Her gentle demeanor coupled with her attentiveness reduced my fears. Andrea sensed how anxious we were to leave our fragile mom that night and she assured us that she would take great care of her. It was her gentle demeanor that allayed our fears and put us at ease.
Unfortunately, the next morning before her shift ended Mom suffered massive complications and needed to be placed on Comfort Care. That evening Andrea took the time to share with us that Mom had a great evening; that she was teasing and joking with Andrea and a nursing student. Andrea sharing this information provided comfort to my brother, who was inconsolable.
During the week Andrea was Mom's nurse several times. She was the first nurse who offered to do oral care for her. Andrea explained that Mom would appreciate oral care and why. She explained the process and even afterwards moisturized her lips. While Andrea tenderly did the mouth care, the nursing student gently washed Mom's face. And their loving care didn't stop there… they quickly worked as a team to change and reposition Mom. I observed Andrea mentoring the student on several shifts. She not only had a great rapport with her, but Andrea was a good teacher and role model.
As the week progressed and Mom deteriorated, we were all a wreck. Andrea's comforting words and kindness will not be forgotten. She knew how important it was that I stay with Mom around the clock. Andrea tended to my needs by offering me pillows, a blanket, and ice water. It is hard to take care of yourself when your loved one is dying and I am so thankful for Andrea's thoughtful, tender gestures and her outstanding commitment to Mom's care.
Andrea truly emulates Winchester Medical Center's goal to provide Compassionate Care and excellent service!
