I had a patient with difficulty of sleep/rest at night due to his severe heart failure/anasarca/over 400 lbs. body weight. One night, when I came to work, he was bathed from head to toe and lotioned from head to toe by the evening shift RN, Andi. He was sleeping like a baby overnight. Not only his medical condition but also his attitude changed rapidly toward a positive outcome (gradually losing weight in a short period of time, friendly attitude towards staff). A week later, when I saw him, I was not even able to recognize him due to his rapid changes.
Also, recently I had a 92-year-old sundowning patient. She had been agitated and confused every night and getting out of bed without calling for help every 30 minutes without sleeping. On her 3rd night, when I came to work, Andi had fully bathed her from head to toe during her shift, and she was alert/oriented that entire night. She used the call light appropriately each time before getting out of bed to use the restroom in a polite/friendly manner. Her family was so happy and very much appreciated Andi's compassionate and outstanding professionalism.
Andi made a difference not only for our patients/members/families but also for oncoming staffs' workflow in a positive way as a role model. Andi deserves to be recognized as an "extraordinary healer".
