She asked if I was aware of having a facial droop.
I would like to nominate Andrea for the DAISY Award for her exceptional clinical awareness, swift action, and compassionate care that truly made a lifesaving difference. On a Friday afternoon, I walked onto 2 South. As soon as Andrea saw me, she immediately noticed something was wrong. She asked if I was aware of having a facial droop. I told her I didn’t think so, but she reassured me—calmly and professionally—that she was seeing a concerning change. Without hesitation, she went straight into nurse mode.
Andrea performed a focused neurological assessment right there on the unit. She had me read from the stroke sheet to evaluate my speech and asked Patti to take a second look—both to confirm her findings and to reassure me. Her approach was thorough, gentle, and grounded in genuine concern.
After reflecting on Andrea’s assessment, I decided to seek medical evaluation. I was subsequently admitted, and it was confirmed that I had indeed experienced a stroke. I am profoundly grateful that Andrea recognized the signs immediately. Her sharp clinical instincts and prompt action prevented what could have become a far more serious and devastating event.
I previously worked on 2 South before moving into another role, and this experience reminded me of what makes that team so special. The compassion, skill, and attentiveness of the nurses on that unit are extraordinary. Andrea exemplifies these qualities in every way. Her vigilance and kindness truly made a difference in my life.
I am thankful I was in the right place, with the right nurse, at exactly the right moment. Andrea’s actions reflect the very heart of nursing, and she is deeply deserving of the DAISY Award.
