The department had a days-old newborn brought in for respiratory distress. Andrea immediately jumped into action providing immediate life-saving nursing care. She secured a difficult IV and suggested bringing the infant warmer out to keep the patient adequately warmed to prevent hypothermia. She kept a careful eye monitoring the patient's condition and was the first nurse to notice the patient become bradycardia, and she intervened with RT to administer rescue breaths from BVM before the patient became more unstable.

Even though Andrea was not the primary nurse, her quick thinking, careful monitoring, and timely interventions provided the best outcome for the patient to be stabilized and transferred to a higher level of care. She worked seamlessly with the health care team and provided valuable ideas to render excellent care to a critical patient. Andrea was able to use her Spanish speaking skills to communicate with the family of the patient and establish trust and provide emotional support for the parents of the child. She patiently answered all their questions and comforted them while their child was being stabilized. Her professionalism, collaboration, caring and empathy truly made her stand out from her peers in this critical situation.
