She had been able to make this happen before and wanted to make sure that even though the patient had serious medical issues, she would be able to have enough time with her baby to grieve and process.
We were notified that there was a medically complex patient who had suffered a fetal demise in L&D. We were working to find an appropriate space on one of the maternity floors when the L&D RSN let us know that die to the patient's medical conditions, she would have to be transferred to the Stanford adult hospital. It seemed tragic because the patient had wanted to keep her baby with her for as long as possible.

I was F2 RSN, and Andrea was 374 RSN. She called me to ask if it was okay for her to reach out to the L&D RSN to talk her through transferring the baby with the patient to Sandford. She had been able to make this happen before and wanted to make sure that even though the patient had serious medical issues, she would be able to have enough time with her baby to grieve and process. I agreed, and Andrea called the L&D RSN to talk her through the process. Thus, the patient was able to transfer with her baby and have the baby in the room as long as she needed.

Andrea is one of the most knowledgeable and biggest-hearted nurses, and I am so glad that she happened to be working that day to facilitate this process in a very difficult situation.
