My father suffered a heart attack. This was especially serious since he had been in renal failure for quite a time prior to this. He was treated at a facility closer to his home and released from ICU four days later. The following day he was readmitted for a second heart attack. We transferred to Saint Vincent the following day and to the 8th floor two days later.
Andy was his nurse and they immediately bonded because they shared a cultural heritage. They connected on a personal level which we had not seen in other inactions with Dad's other caregivers. Andy had a way of gently breaking through his guff outer shell. They shared what small bits of German that Dad knew, and he had a way of explaining and encouraging proper care and treatment that Dad could not refuse. He shared our celebration of Dad's 90th birthday and took the time (his own break time, I'm sure) to stop and talk even though Dad was not his patient every day. Andy's compassion did not end with Dad, but with all of our extended family who filled the room daily. He was constantly attentive to our needs too and understood the pressures we have been under whilecaring for Dad the past several years. He secured a larger hospice room for us when he saw the strong family structure we enjoy and until our departure continued to show compassion, loving care, and strong professionalism. He was truly an angel from heaven and a blessing we will not forget. He will remain in our hearts and prayers, as an honorary member of the family.
Dad even told him, in a not often seen moment, "Andy, I think you're alright, you are a good man."
