Andrew said let's walk and talk, despite how busy he was and notwithstanding the relative mayhem on the floor.
I was admitted to the hospital for confusion (more like delirium) and severe anxiety state, pursuant to a poly-drug reaction. I had a restless night due to anxiety and symptoms related to RLS. I asked Andrew if I could walk around with my cane so that I could manage the restlessness in my legs. Andrew said let's walk and talk, despite how busy he was and notwithstanding the relative mayhem on the floor. How do you all manage to handle all of this so very well? I worked in the medical field all my life, inpatient settings including ED, BH, and medical, but I remain totally impressed that irrespective of the number of patients on the floor, Andrew considered that my foot drop may cause a fall. I get that a fall is a legal concern, but it is also a quality of care and humanitarian one. This was a small albeit important detail known by Andrew despite the volume of the other patients on the floor, active patients at that, one that he addressed with professional and compassionate good humor. I only needed to walk a short distance but Andrew was there, talking and listening while clearly assessing my state of anxiety. His attention to detail is imperative, but so is true understanding, empathy, and compassion.
