My husband was a patient in the MSICU over the holidays. He had a GI bleed and received eighteen units of blood by the time he went to the floor. It was a stressful time, and I felt uncomfortable leaving him. On the third morning, I met Nurse Andrew. My husband was so pleased with him, and I immediately knew why. Andrew knows his job well. He is very efficient and knowledgeable. His bedside manner was the icing on the cake. We felt so comfortable and knew Andrew would not let any changes in my husband’s condition get past him. Andrew looked beyond the work and saw us. My husband felt comfortable asking for something or about something. He was also considerate of my needs.

I requested Andrew be my husband’s nurse for the next day. That morning my husband called to tell me he was again his nurse. That was the first day in which I didn’t rush in.

I know the unit was busy and Andrew had three other patients. I would not have known by his care and pleasant manner. I would not have known if I had not asked him.

If this doesn’t demonstrate all the qualities of a DAISY Nurse, I don’t know what does.
