Throughout our interactions, it was clear that Andrew was vested in my father’s well-being. Andrew continuously checked on my dad to make sure that he was comfortable and would chat with him.
My 79-year-old father was admitted to the hospital through your emergency room. His prior physicians had prescribed over 20 medications for him to take daily. These medications left him physically ill, anxious, depressed and disoriented. Managing the medications was overwhelming and he started to experience chest pains from all of the stress. In my past interactions with PIH Whittier I had always received exceptional care, it was for this reason that I intentionally brought my father to your hospital.

While the treatment he received in the emergency room was exceptional, his first night in the hospital was less than ideal. A little after 6:00 pm, we asked his nurse about dinner and was assured that it “was coming.” When we called the nursing station an hour later to inquire about his dinner, we were told that dinner was over. When his nurse came back into the room during the shift change, we told him that he had not been fed and he responded, “I’ll look into it.” Ten minutes passed and still nothing. As I was going down to the cafeteria to purchase food for my father, I ran into the night nurse who was able to provide my father with a sandwich and crackers. That night, my father did not receive his pain medications until around 10:00 pm which left him suffering and in pain.

When I returned to the hospital the next morning, he was exhausted and frustrated. We explained to the doctor and his day nurse, Andrew, what had happened. Andrew was visibly disturbed at the treatment my father received and apologized. Throughout our interactions, it was clear that Andrew was vested in my father’s well-being. Andrew continuously checked on my dad to make sure that he was comfortable and would chat with him. He made it a point throughout his day to ensure that my dad received his medications on time and that he received every meal. In fact, he personally brought my dad his medications before the end of his shift because he didn’t want to risk him not getting his medications until 10:00 pm again. I saw a noticeable change in my dad’s demeanor after interacting with Andrew. This was the type of service that I expected from PIH Whittier.

When I arrived in the morning, my dad told me that coming to the hospital was a mistake and that they didn’t care about him, he was so frustrated he wanted to leave. After spending a day with Andrew taking care of him, he was hopeful once again. Andrew didn’t have to put the extra effort in to take care of my father, but he did, which is why I believe he is a DAISY Nurse.
