August 2026 Honoree
Andrew Tharpe, RN
My father was admitted after having a severe reaction to tramadol. Andrew came in the next morning as "Mr. Sunshine." After a traumatic night, Andrew quickly won me over with the kindness he showed my 90-year-old father with dementia.
Andrew smiled each time he asked my father to do something and always got down to his eye level. He listened carefully and quickly understood everything our family had gone through. He was empathetic to my father's confusion and respectful after learning that my father was a retired pediatrician.
On Friday evening, I realized my dad's trazodone had not been given, and it was already 7:45 p.m. Andrew listened as I explained how important it was that my father receive it to avoid a difficult night. He made sure he got it immediately.
When I returned on Saturday, Andrew met me in the hall and told me he remembered our conversation and had already planned ahead to make sure my father received his medication earlier. That night went much better.
Andrew always addressed my father as "my friend," which meant so much to our family. He even offered to help bathe him twice. Andrew went above and beyond while caring for my father. His kindness, compassion, attentiveness, and respect made a lasting impact on our family during a very difficult time. I am truly grateful for the exceptional care he provided.
