I am nominating Angie Bowers for the DAISY Award for her compassionate care of a patient in our unit recently with significant psychiatric needs. This patient was having acute psychosis and required 24/7 care – this meant a nurse, PSA, and security guard at bedside to ensure this patient would be safe and not able to harm themselves. I witnessed Angie providing the patient with tireless redirection, de-escalation, and empathy. Angie ensured the environmental safety of the patient and adjusted things to prevent environmental triggers from worsening the patient’s symptoms. She did an incredible job of validating the patient’s experiences and feelings while also being calm, objective, and factual. All of this required an enormous amount of energy and effort on Angie’s behalf, and she willingly cared for this patient multiple shifts during his admission in our department. What I also appreciated about Angie’s care of this patient was her compassion for his situation and her extreme kindness at the bedside for a patient that is not the typical patient an ICU nurse would care for. Angie, thank you so much for everything you did to provide care for this patient in our unit! Your kindness and expertise are truly appreciated!
