The patient finally relaxed in the dark room, and Angie was gently comforting him by rubbing his arm. Angie spent hours caring for the patient and his mother.
A few weeks ago, a young developmentally delayed and complex patient came to PACU after surgery. When he began to wake up, the patient became aggravated and restless. Many nurses, doctors, and the patient's mom were attempting to keep him calm while holding his extremities so he couldn't injure himself or others. The patient was not meaning to cause harm. He was disoriented and confused, even more so from baseline. Angie stayed at the bedside, ensuring excellent care for not only the patient but the patient's mother as well. Angie advocated for the needs of the patient and made sure that his mom was always included in the discussions and decisions.
We eventually moved him into a more private location, as even the slightest noise would trigger him. I walked in to check on the situation-including ensuring safety for my nurse and friend- and saw a beautiful scene (in which I would hope my child would receive the kind of love, care, and compassion that Angie was showing). The patient finally relaxed in the dark room, and Angie was gently comforting him by rubbing his arm. Angie spent hours caring for the patient and his mother.
While many may have complained about dealing with a complicated patient, Angie just smiled. I have had the honor of working with her for about four years at the bedside, and I can honestly say I learn from her daily. She is the true picture of a nurse- empathetic, dedicated, selfless, and strong.
