Her ability to connect with patients and genuinely care about them never ceases to impress and amaze me; I admired it long before she formally introduced herself to me.
Throughout my time of knowing her, Angela has exemplified what it means to be an exceptional nurse, displaying kindness, compassion, care, and empathy in every situation, no matter who she is interacting with. I first saw this when Angela was inundated with work: answering call lights, helping other nurses, assisting patients however she could, etc, all without complaint or hesitation. It was my third week on the Oncology unit. I was staring at the monitor for hours, waiting for call lights to flash on the screen, too scared to interact with anyone, when Angela came up to me, took the time to learn my life story, got to know me, and took me under her wing for the rest of her shift. It was then that I learned she became an oncology nurse after her own battle with cancer, at the very hospital where she now works. She explained that, after her battle with cancer, she wanted to help people with the same loving care she received. It is not just "talk" as she demonstrates this every day at work. Her ability to connect with patients and genuinely care about them never ceases to impress and amaze me; I admired it long before she formally introduced herself to me. And as great as every nurse is, here on the Oncology unit, I have never seen someone be as incredible as Angela. She showcases on a daily basis, whether she thinks someone is looking or not, what it means to be a DAISY Award nurse. I am no stranger to healthcare. I am an Oncology Unit Volunteer, a former Certified Nursing Assistant at a large hospital (on the med/surg unit), and I was hospitalized at various hospitals 15 times. Additionally, I am a former peer support counselor and support line volunteer at the National Alliance on Mental Illness. So, I'd like to think I'm no stranger to healthcare or a judge of character. I have never in my life seen a nurse more deserving of the DAISY Award than Angela.
