I am nominating Angela Miller, Nurse Manager of B5, for the Nurse Leader Award. As a new Nurse Manager, she has navigated challenging times on our nursing unit with professionalism and grace. Angela is one of the most eloquent and well-spoken nurse leaders I have had the pleasure to work alongside. In fact, I regularly tell her that she is my role model for eloquent speaking. She has amazed me with her growth in this position in such a short period. Angela is a Nurse’s nurse, embodying the qualities of compassion, care, kindness, angelic nature, a heart of gold, empathy, intelligence, continual learning, advocacy, protection, honesty, hard work, and dedication.
As Nurse Manager, Angela has juggled numerous challenges, a common scenario for today’s healthcare leaders, including the emotionally charged topic of workplace violence. Our patient population presents several social challenges, but Angela consistently rises to the occasion, focusing on staff safety. Despite her tireless efforts and strategic planning to handle these situations and ensure resource availability for nursing care, Angela has never shied away from seeking sustainable, long-term solutions for the safety of her entire team. Her efforts have paid off, resulting in positive outcomes.
Amidst the challenges of workplace violence and its impact on staff, Angela has shown unending support. She has actively participated in emotional wellness support group meetings, granted time off to staff, and worked tirelessly with security and nursing administration to provide necessary resources and support. Angela is often on the unit assisting with de-escalation efforts, frequently checks on staff, and remains transparent and honest throughout. She addresses these issues in meetings, huddles, and evaluations, encouraging the unit council to propose new ideas. Angela has proven herself a true leader, committed to ensuring the safety of her staff so they can focus on providing the best care to our patients.
