I developed an abscess from a surgery performed elsewhere and was nervous and in a large amount of pain. The pain I’d had the surgery from was to remove my entire small intestine. I was in rough shape and also tried hiding a bad case of restless legs syndrome. I had had RLS for several years, but was so embarrassed by it, that I tried hiding it under the blankets until Angela came in with such compassion and said she was here to help. I opened up to her about how bad the RLS was and that I’d been in so much abdominal pain because I’d been pacing the room trying to conceal my legs’ incessant desire to keep moving. I felt like I was “losing” it, but Angela kindly and sensitively assured me I wasn’t. She spoke with my doctor who prescribed a medicine for RLS and for the first time in years, my legs weren’t crawling at me to move. I wasn’t feeling panicked that my legs were going to be keeping me up all night. I slept. I was heard and I wasn’t judged. This is just one small act of the many ways Angela has been a 5-star nurse to me. She has made me feel like I have dignity at all times and listened to my fears and pains. This nurse is a saint above all nurses and deserves recognition.
