She would hold Mom’s hand and speak to her as if she were family, calming her down in a soothing voice.
Angela was one of my mom’s 1-on-1 nurses when she was intubated. When I thanked her for being so kind and compassionate, her response was “I am always thinking ‘how would I want my family member to be treated if I were in your shoes.’” She would hold Mom’s hand and speak to her as if she were family, calming her down in a soothing voice; she even sat and talked to and listened to us family for extended periods of time. She even encouraged me, as the daughter of a patient, to take advantage of the therapy dog when he came around! And made it possible for mom to as well.

Angela showed us the same kindness on and off the unit, talking to us family in the cafeteria and giving us a heads up that she was bummed for being moved to a different patient for the following shift. A few days later, when mom had miraculously made progress, she stopped in and visited with her without being asked. The staff at this hospital is truly wonderful, brightening our spirits during one of the worst weeks of our lives. Our mom has survived due to the exceptional care provided by all the staff and nurses, but Angela stood out to me, my aunt, and stepdad for her obvious passion for her job/patients.
