Angela Tyler new to UTMB hired and on-boarded in Jan 2018, presented to her first day of orientation in the clinic. She was involved in assisting a pediatric patient who was involved in a motor vehicle accident earlier that day and seen at a local Emergency Center and sent home. The parents brought the child to the urgent care clinic due to continued crying and hard to console per the parents.
Upon assessment, the child had bruising, and slight deformity noted to the hip area. The provider and nursing staff felt at this time the patient needed to be re-evaluated by the Emergency Center for possible femur or hip fracture/dislocation and the local EMS was called. Once they arrived, the paramedics questioned the parents about what happened at the Emergency Center which the parents relayed no x-rays were done. The paramedics were very disrespectful to parents with non-verbal cues of rolling their eyes at each statement the parents were saying. The inappropriateness of the EMS crew left the parents upset to which they decided to take the child back to the nearest Emergency Center for reevaluations.
Angela and her team stabilized the patient's injury to ensure no further damage would occur. Angela being the conscientious and compassionate nurse she is, wrote a long letter to the Chief of the local EMS explaining her disheartening experience and inappropriateness of the EMS staff to the family, patient and the clinic staff.
Her advocacy for this patient and the family indicates her willingness to "go above and beyond" for the best interest and care our patients deserve. She truly displays the mission and vision of our organization along with the expectations of our nursing profession to always be the advocate for our patients no matter who they may be. Angela worked as part of a team to provide appropriate treatment for this child including appropriate splinting to stabilize a potentially fractured femur. She was able to identify this patient needed a higher level of care due to the extent of his injury.
Ms. Tyler exemplifies excellence in Nursing her first day on the job.
