LMH chose to award the second DAISY Award with a surprise presentation and ceremony while the honoree was working. This presentation took place on July 9, 2012. This presentation was challenging because Angie is one of our committee members. She could not be in attendance for the meeting during which our honoree was selected. Thus we were able to plan the ceremony as a surprise to her. She was given a bouquet of daisies and some balloons in addition to her certificate and “Healer’s Touch” statue. Cinnabon rolls were served to her unit as well as the other two shifts and those in attendance for the presentation.
Following is an excerpt from her nomination letter.
“Angie came into our lives on Sunday or Monday, I am not sure. I have spent many days in hospitals due to a family member and have experienced nursing at its very best. Never have any of us present through those days met someone like Angie. She was there for my Mother first but the family seemed to be just as important to her. She managed her nursing responsibilities so well, but we felt she was there for all of us personally. At the time my Mother was on the floor, there were several other serious hospice type cases so it was busy.
It never seemed like we called Angie. She was always there checking, providing extra care for my Mother. We could sense how much she cared almost immediately. She would sit with us and look at pictures and hear stories of my Mother’s life. She brought humor with her when appropriate and that was so helpful. Her support for our family and care for my Mother transformed the dying experience for all of us. I think she was an angel sent to us that helped us through the process in a way I could never have imagined.
The day my Mother died, Angie was off. She had said she was coming in to see my Mother anyway. That speaks volumes. She was there almost at the exact time Mother passed away. Angie came in and helped Mother into a restful and respectful pose and then the Chaplin came in. Without hesitation our Family immediately asked Angie to join us in a prayer circle for Mother. Angie held my Mother’s hand (so fitting since she helped Mother’s journey so profoundly) and I was across from her holding Mother’s other hand. The family completed the circle.”
