Angelina took care of a patient at the end of her life during her ER visit. This was a patient with a history of lung CA who awoke during the night with sudden shortness of breath. She arrived at the ED and with her advanced stage of cancer; not much could be done. She was made comfort measures and Angelina stayed past the end of her shift to be with this patient for her in the last hours of her life.
Angelina's shift had ended over 2 hours prior to this patient expiring, but she stayed not only to be with the patient but to be with the patient's sister, who was the only other family this patient had. At one point, Dr. S walked into the patient's room to the sight of the nurse holding this patient against her chest with her arm around her, as she took her last breaths. This patient and her sister had no idea that that day would be her last. Yes, she had cancer and she knew she was dying but the sudden onset of her symptoms took them both by surprise. The patient's sister had stated to Dr. S, "I didn't know people could care like this."
Dr. S had stated to me, that he had "never seen anything like this before" and it truly brought this patient and her sister total comfort during this difficult time.
