He brought joy to a young lady who had not felt joy for some time.
Our family is nominating Angelo Ciardella for The DAISY Award for the reasons below. My 32-yr old daughter, who is developmentally disabled, was an inpatient on 7A at the University of Michigan, suffering from catatonia and polypharmacy. Our nurse for those 3 nights, Angelo Ciardella, put her at ease with his kind nature and caring comments. He went above and beyond to keep us informed, both positive and hopeful. He brought joy to a young lady who had not felt joy for some time. My wife and I remained with our daughter the entire stay, and any questions or concerns we had, he provided us with the information and updates. If my daughter needed anything, Angelo made sure she had it with his “2-feet and a heartbeat”. This was also the same for my wife and I. To illustrate the impact Angelo had on my daughter, I will share this story. On the day after Angelo’s last work night, my wife and I took our daughter to the gift shop to buy a stuffed animal. She loves stuffed animals, sleeps with one every night, and has named each of them. Upon returning to the room, we asked her if she had a name picked out for her new “stuffie”, and without hesitation, she said Angelo! We asked if it was after her nurse, and she indicated that indeed it was! We then asked why and she said, “because he made her feel safe, and she loved his personality”. This young man had a huge impact on our family, and we will always be grateful to him. Angelo, the stuffie, will be a reminder to us for years to come of our stay at UM and our nurse Angelo, because he was a wonderful, kind, and caring nurse that we were fortunate to have care for our daughter.
