Even after 18 years of my husband being on dialysis, this ICU stay felt completely different. Dialysis in the ICU is not like regular dialysis. There are more monitors, more alarms, and everything feels more intense. Every small change in his blood pressure or heart rate felt scary.
In the middle of all that, Angelyn, the dialysis nurse, was right by his side. She took the time to walk us through what was happening in the moment, explaining things in simple terms and how she was working closely with the ICU team to keep him safe. She made sure we understood what was happening.
As his wife, I was sitting there trying to hold myself together. She noticed how scared I was, looked at me, and gently said, “He’s doing alright. His blood pressure is a bit low at times, but we’re on top of it.” That one moment meant more than she knew. I felt seen, heard, and supported.
What Angelyn offered went far beyond dialysis care. In a moment when everything felt heavy and uncertain, she brought a sense of comfort I didn’t even realize I needed. She didn’t just care for my husband; she cared for me, too. The way she spoke to us with such calm and respect, the steady way she guided us through every step of his dialysis treatment, and the genuine compassion she showed in every moment made a real difference.
