The initial diagnosis was incorrect and Angie’s insight and escalating the issue led to the correct diagnosis and the patient getting the correct care.
Angie assumed care of a patient who was admitted for postpartum preeclampsia. After spending time at the patient’s bedside, Angie noticed the patient’s blood pressures were normal but that her kidney stone symptoms seemed much worse. She asked me, as the attending, to reevaluate the patient. I went to the patient’s bedside and agreed with Angie’s assessment. I ordered a repeat ultrasound, and it turned out that Angie’s insights had been spot on; the patient’s previously non-obstructing kidney stone was now obstructing. The initial diagnosis was incorrect and Angie’s insight and escalating the issue led to the correct diagnosis and the patient getting the correct care. This is also just one example of the many amazing, astute, patient-centered care events that Angie leads on a daily basis. I feel lucky every time I get to work with her. She is an incredible advocate for her patients and an amazing nurse.
