My grandfather was admitted to the hospital after a period of declining health. Throughout the weekend, there were several conversations about the potential for a surgical palliative repair of his hip. My family had a difficult shared decision-making conversation with the doctor. We opted to make him comfort measures only. Fortunately for us, Anita Carl was my grandfather's nurse. As soon as she learned that he had been changed to CMO, she rose to the occasion to make not only my grandfather comfortable but also all of us at his bedside comfortable as well. She was a tremendous advocate for his care, incredibly on top of his medication administration so that he was kept as comfortable as possible, as well as repositioning him frequently and applying ice to his still broken hip. Her dedication to nursing and caring for the patient and the entire family in this situation was like no other. She went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable with our decision, as well as describe what was happening in a beautiful way. We are so grateful that she set my grandfather up to have the most beautiful end-of-life care experience possible.
