I want to thank Anita Delconte for her dedication and tireless support for breastfeeding families. It is not uncommon for me to enter a patient's room only to hear them say they felt confident regarding breastfeeding because of the help they received from Anita. In fact, I entered two rooms today to hear from one patient "no thanks, I don't need help because Anita has helped me all day." The other patient stated, "thank goodness Anita was with me today because I was really nervous about breastfeeding but not after she helped. Anita was a godsend." Anita's approach is one that is effective, I believe, because she really works to meet the patient where they are and reassures patients that they will have the support they need when they need it by the nurses and/or lactation. This approach seems to provide a great deal of comfort to families as they feel less pressure to absorb all the breastfeeding education they believe is essential to know in one IBCLC or RN visit. Anita has years of experience working with new parents yet gives the patients the feeling that their concerns are important and unique. I believe Anita accomplishes this by the time she invests in just listening intently and then making a plan with thepatient and with lactation to address the patient's concerns while also working to build their confidence and empower the new families in the parenting role. Anita is a team player as she frequently will go in rooms regardless of her assignment if needed and provide support to the patient. Anita he does not wait for interventions such as pumping and hand expression to be instructed by lactation - if she has time she will frequently start working with the patient herself. Anita is an extraordinary nurse and I believe this even more after hearing two patients sing her praise in a row.
