She was smiling, being receptive, laughing, and allowing us to talk to her and help her with her needs.
Recently, we had a patient who was exceptionally brutal with her words and actions towards every member of our team. This patient, who had also been a nurse in her life, had gone through very traumatic losses and would not allow anyone to get close to her. Her stay resulted in a physical hold with forced medications. The day after, Ann Davison took this patient on knowing that she had been deemed “difficult”. The first thing Ann did that morning was enter her room and begin helping her with things that the patient needed. Ann wrapped this patient up in a blanket, escorted her to the shower, and assisted her in bathing. After that, Ann frequently checked on her throughout the day, assisting her with meals, and medications, talking with her, encouraging her, and maintaining her personal needs. The day after Ann had taken her on, the patient had changed. She was smiling, being receptive, laughing, and allowing us to talk to her and help her with her needs. She had completely changed for the better. When I asked Ann how this happened, all she said was “I supported her pain for her losses and told her she was worth so much more than her anger”. There are so many situations in which Ann shows her strength and compassion as a nurse; this example is just a small snapshot of what it is like to work with someone who is knowledgeable and completely empathetic to the pains of the human condition.
