I'm a 69-year-old single woman living by myself. I was very healthy all my life, until that morning when the nurse called me with the news. Surgery came soon after. I was frightened and at the very lowest of my life. You see, to me, as a woman, breast cancer is very personal and devastating. When I awoke from my anesthesia, a kind and caring nurse named Ann was so very compassionate in my treatment. She made me feel safe and cared for. When it was finally time to go home, Ann helped me into the wheelchair and rolled me out to my daughter's car. Before getting into my seat, Ann hugged and kissed me on the cheek. Both my daughter and I were touched by that. I can't tell you how grateful I am that Indiana has wonderful, compassionate professionals like Ann. She is more than worthy of this recognition.
