Dr. Carol “Ann” King, DNP, FNP-BC is an exemplary faculty member at the College of Nursing at East Carolina University. As a senior faculty member initially in the AGNP/FNP concentrations and now the DNP program, Dr. King provides leadership in curriculum development, mentors new faculty and students. Dr. King is a co-investigator on two interprofessional grants within the College of Nursing where she provides expertise in the coordination of the Virtual Clinic Community Learning Environment (VCCL), an innovative immersive, virtual environment utilized to teach interprofessional clinical management in primary care settings. Furthermore, Dr. King extends her excellence in education by serving as the chair of the Eastern NC Cancer Coalition.
A recognized expert, she is a frequent speaker on colon cancer and men’s health issues with related peer-reviewed publications. Dr. King further extends her reach through the scholarship of service, lending her considerable expertise as the inaugural chair of the DNP council within the North Carolina Nurses Association.
A long-time Servire recipient, Dr. King has continued with volunteer hours in annual humanitarian faith-based projects that have been an asset in the global initiatives in advanced practice nursing through her work in Nicaragua. Since 2008, she has traveled on a volunteer mission trip to Leon, Nicaragua where her team treats and provides medications for approximately 800 patients per week. She coordinates the pharmaceutical orders and licensure requirements for clinicians on the trip, sets up the clinics daily and supervises patient care.
Her synergistic work with the ECU collaborative in Nicaragua has been an asset to both the College of Nursing and the School of Medicine. Dr. King is a shining example of the excellence embodied here at the CON. I wholeheartedly recommend (Dr. King) as a recipient of the DAISY Award in acknowledgement of her continuing contributions.
