Ann was working as a department float RN when a patient came into the emergency room through triage. The patient had no family and was brought in by a neighbor. He was confused. He was covered in dry stool from his mid back to his knees and his clothes were dirty and saturated with urine. His beard was matted with food and he had terrible body odor. Ann took the time to bathe this patient from head to toe. She washed his hair and shaved his beard. Ann was unable to salvage the patient's sweatpants and shirt and they had to be thrown away. The patient was upset because he did not have many other items of clothing at home. Ann reassured the patient that she would see that he had replacements.
The patient was admitted to the floor from the emergency department. Ann used funds from the Pay It Forward program to purchase new clothes for the patient to replace the ones she had to throw away. She also took his coat and shoes and laundered them then returned them to the patient the next day before he was discharged from the hospital. This is just one example of the amazing things Ann does for her patients. She shows kindness and compassion to those in need and goes above and beyond.
Additional nomination for Ann.
Ann has been a long standing member of the BN emergency department. She is the reason the ED has a "Pay it Forward" program. She does a variety of inner department fundraisers to ensure that there are funds to help people in need. She has worked tirelessly over the years. She has been a leader in sponsoring needy families in various communities. She has helped members of our ED staff and she also helps patients and families. I often tell her she is an angel among us!
The story that one of my colleagues documented is just one of many stories that could be told about Ann. She has the biggest heart and is willing to go out of her way to help others. She honestly does things that others would not even think of doing. As she related the story of the gentleman who was unable to care for himself or his clothing, she didn't even think twice about bringing his soiled coat and shoes to her home to launder them. Her only thought was that he didn't have anything else, and they needed to be cleaned.
In addition to her excellent caring attitude, she is also an excellent clinical nurse. She is a leader in the ED and in the hospital. Ann works as a house supervisor on the night shift and when the organization decided to open a chest pain unit, she thought she should work there too. Ann is a team player and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that patient care comes first. Ann is the epitome of a super human nurse.
