She believes in doing what's best for our patients and working through the barriers to accomplish this
I've known Anna, as a person, for as long as I've worked at Advent Health Shawnee Mission. I can honestly remember getting report from her, as a brand-new nurse, over 20 years ago! Anna Burge positively impacts the practice environment by having an "open door policy" so staff, etc., can feel comfortable going to her no matter the problem. She believes in doing what's best for our patients and working through the barriers to accomplish this; "it's not the easy way, but it's the best way & it's the best for the patient." She communicates effectively with other leadership & departments, whether needing eight rolls of Medipore tape for discharging patients (which CD states they're out of, but Anna has picked up the phone & all eight rolls of tape have arrived within 10 minutes!), or calling therapy due a patient being antsy to discharge home with a 4-hour drive ahead of them but he needs a 2nd therapy session before he can transition home. She strives for excellence not only in the care of her staff on her respective units, but also for those patients & families. We've had patients leave without supplies crucial to their recovery from surgical procedures, & she's personally taken them to patient's homes after leaving the hospital for the evening. She's continuously looking at things from different perspectives, learning to grow. She is the director of not one but TWO units! The stress, inner workings, staffing, communication, charge meetings, staff meetings & UBC meetings are now doubled! She volunteered to manage both units, and parks on the top deck of the parking garage so staff of both units know she's here (somewhere). She is here, on one unit or the other, usually long past the time other leadership has left for the evening. I am happy to be working alongside Anna in my current role as a charge nurse, and I hope she'll consider keeping her current role as Director of Orthopedics & Oncology for a while longer!
