Anna, during one of her morning assessments, noted one of our patient’s fontanels felt slightly more full than normal. She also had recently vomited. She, with those 2 symptoms on a complex medical child with a VP shunt, was immediately concerned and called me to assess the patient. The fontanel finding was very subtle, and many would have not picked that up – myself included! We ordered STAT imaging, and this patient showed signs of VP shunt malfunction. She required immediate surgery with Neurosurgery. Without Anna being as thorough and aware of concerning clinical findings in this particular patient, there could have potentially been a delay in diagnosis and surgery! This is one example of the many reasons why Anna is a pleasure to work with – she is extremely knowledgeable, always puts her patients first, and always has a smile on her face doing it.
