Anna M Hoo, MSN, RN.
I am honored to nominate Anna Hoo for the DAISY Award. I submit this nomination as an administrator at a community birthing center that partners closely with the hospital. Our shared goal is to ensure that when a transfer from our center becomes necessary, each patient experiences a seamless transition, compassionate care, and unwavering support. Anna has been instrumental in making that vision a reality.
She has intentionally built and nurtured a strong partnership between the hospital and our birthing center, bridging communication gaps, aligning expectations, and enhancing the overall patient experience. Transfers often occur unexpectedly and under emotionally charged circumstances. Many patients arrive feeling frightened, disappointed, or as though their birth plans have failed. Anna deeply understands this emotional reality and consistently goes above and beyond to ensure these patients feel respected, supported, and genuinely cared for—not only clinically, but emotionally.
Her commitment extends far beyond routine responsibilities. On one occasion, over a weekend, we transferred a patient who was extremely distressed and difficult to console. Anna came into the hospital specifically to meet with the patient and her family. She took the time to listen attentively, acknowledge their concerns, and offer reassurance. Through her presence and compassion, she transformed a tense and painful situation into one in which the patient felt heard, valued, and safe.
In another profoundly heartbreaking situation, a transferred patient experienced a fetal demise. When the family struggled to have the patient’s brother released from military duty to be present, and communication from other sources was limited, Anna personally took the initiative to contact the Army and provide the necessary clinical information. Because of her advocacy and persistence, the family was able to have their loved one present during one of the most devastating moments of their lives. These actions embody the true spirit of the DAISY Award. Anna demonstrates extraordinary compassion, advocacy, and human connection. She leads with empathy, steps forward during the most difficult moments, and consistently prioritizes the emotional and psychological well-being of patients and families—even when it requires personal time and exceptional effort.
From the perspective of our birthing center, her partnership has strengthened trust between our organizations and elevated the standard of collaborative care we provide together. Because of her leadership, we have complete confidence that when transfer becomes necessary, our patients will be welcomed with understanding, dignity, and exceptional clinical and emotional support. That reassurance means everything to the families we serve.
Anna does not simply fulfill the responsibilities of her role—she expands them. She models what compassionate nursing leadership looks like and sets a standard that positively influences colleagues, patients, and community partners alike. Her impact reaches far beyond individual encounters; it shapes systems, builds bridges, and creates safer, more supportive experiences for families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
For these reasons, I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend Anna Hoo for the DAISY Award. She is profoundly deserving of this recognition, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside a nurse whose practice so beautifully reflects the heart of our profession.
