Anna went above and beyond the acceptable standard of care at every turn.
I am in 5 Bed Tower, recovering from a bowel obstruction. This is my second stay at UNC this year. I was here for 14 days for bowel obstruction surgery and recovery. At that time, I was also in Bed Tower 5. During my present stay, I have seen and been treated by many of the same doctors, nurses, and aids, as well as many new, friendly, and qualified people. The care I have received here has been outstanding and a great blessing! The past 4 days here, I've reflected on my previous stay and my current stay, and the outstanding care and wonderful nurses who've cared for me. There is one nurse who keeps coming back to my mind based on her knowledge, the excellent quality of her care, and the kindness she showed to me. Her name is Anna Mullins, and I would like to nominate her for a DAISY Award. Midway through my previous stay, a few days after my surgery, I had my 2 most difficult nights. First, I had the NG tube, which, by then, my body was really beginning to reject. Those nights, I was unable to sleep because my throat kept generating phlegm, which kept causing me to cough. Additionally, I was in tremendous pain that had to be managed. Also, I was lethargic from not having had any food or drink for 9 to 10 days at that point. I began to become despondent. It was a very tough and emotional few days for me, and I was getting quietly anxious and worried. It was these 2 days (evenings actually) that Anna Mullins was my nurse assigned. Some of the details are blurry to me, but there are some very distinct things I remember. One of Anna's tasks was to set up and administer TPN. A PICC line team had just installed a line in my left arm. Anna then administered the TPN. It seemed to me that it was a considerably complex task with a lot of steps, but she knew what she was doing and did it in a calm and straightforward way that was very reassuring to me. I felt very good about her and very thankful! Another distinct memory I have is Anna working with me on a solution to the coughing situation that was preventing me from being able to sleep. She was attentive and listened well, and on both nights paged the surgical team in the middle of the night to coordinate the use of an additional medication that helped my cough and allowed me to sleep. Although I know she had a full complement of patients those nights, I felt like she spent at least half the nights caring for me in a very compassionate way. Throughout her care for me, I felt Anna Mullins included me in health care decisions as a participant, and I felt respected. Anna went above and beyond the acceptable standard of care at every turn. My wife, who was with me each night, is a retired nurse herself. She has commented to me on several occasions on how qualified and smart, and clinically excellent she felt Anna Mullins to be, and how calm and reassuring an environment she created. If I need to be hospitalized again for this or any other situation, I will insist on UNC hospital and request to be on 5 Bed Tower, being cared for by Anna and her wonderful peers. Please accept my nomination of Anna Mullins for a DAISY Award. Whether or not Anna is chosen to be a DAISY Award recipient, kindly share this nomination with her as an encouraging word and to serve as our thanks to her for her outstanding care.
