Anna was assigned to care for a SICU patient on airborne precautions. This patient was severely depressed and isolated, as their family was unable to visit for weeks due to precautions. The patient spent most days just lying there with their eyes closed. They said multiple times that they couldn't go on. When Anna came in, she turned on some upbeat dance music, washed the patient's hair, cleaned them up, showed the patient pictures of family and friends, opened the letters that were piling up in the room, and read them to the patient. From then on, this patient's mood was entirely transformed. They felt much better and started smiling. They asked about Anna even when she was off. It was palpable that Anna's effort to cheer them up and give them personalized care and attention completely transformed their difficult experience.
