Anne and I dealt with a very critical situation with the patient. The patient had transferred to our unit with comfort care POLST, yet the patient was not on comfort measures as the family did not agree. After two days of discussing with family, the patient's POLST still was not being honored.
Anne did an amazing job at getting palliative back on board and discussing with the family how the patient was in pain and suffering. Anne advocated for her patient fiercely. She took extra time to talk with a very difficult family and made sure they understood the patient's condition. After getting hospital management involved, the patient was finally placed on comfort measures and the patient was finally able to rest.
I was beyond impressed with how Anne dealt with not only the family but staff involved. She was passionate and articulate in advocating for her patient's wishes when he was no longer able to speak for himself. Because of her actions, the patient passed comfortably and peacefully.
