Anne DeArmond, BSN, RN, C-EFM
When I tell the story of the first hours of my baby's life, the story won't be complete without Anne. Shortly after her C-Section, my wife went into an acute medical emergency. Her heart raced to 180 beats per minute and was surrounded by 30 doctors, nurses, and staff.
Through the scariest moment of my life, as the doctors worked on my wife, Anne stayed right by her side confidently and calmly explaining everything to her. Anne provided a voice of calm reassurance and incredible comfort. Her assured presence and compassion to understand my wife's emotions in those moments were, in my mind, as important as the medications the doctors gave her to lower her heart rate.
As the moment passed, and crash teams and other strangers faded out of the room, we still had Anne to talk with us, care for my wife's every need, and even look after the baby so I could go outside and do what I needed, which was to cry with more relief than I am ever likely to experience again. Even as I write these words, I am again moved with emotion and gratitude, of course, for the brilliantly talented doctors and nurses who saved my wife's life, but the memory of Anne's exceptional care is what I will always carry with me whenever I think of the first day we became a family. In a hospital full of incredible people, Anne truly stands out.
