Shawnee Health Care in Carterville had a patient who needed to go to the ER as soon as possible due to foot ulcers from delayed wound care, which has resulted in some foot and toe amputation in the past. The patient had new wounds and ulcers, and the patient's healthcare team needed the patient to go straight to the ER as soon as possible. The patient would not go because no one could care for his dog while he was in the hospital. Nurse Annette went to the patient's home and informed the patient that she would care for the dog while the patient was at the hospital. The ambulance was called, and the patient was taken to the ER and admitted. The following day, the patient had additional amputations done on some of the remaining toes. Annette took the patient's dog home where she gave it a bath and is caring for the dog while the patient is hospitalized. The patient had delayed his own health care so that he could care for his beloved dog. Annette went above and beyond her job duties in order for the patient to get the care he needed. She has so much compassion for our patients and really thinks out of the box to assist our patients so that they can get the healthcare they need.
