I was Charge Nurse on December 15th and we had 19 surgeries scheduled for our unit. The assignment had me with a new orientee (with no hospital experience) and 3-4 patients. Annette was with another orientee and they had 5 patients. All other RNs were maxed out and we were short 1 PCA. Surgeries started coming at 8:30 am and several at once. My 11:00 am RNs were not on the unit yet. Annette took over precepting my orientee RN along with hers for a total of 9 patients so I could focus on placing surgeries, charge role, help, etc... Every time a surgery arrived on unit, Annette jumped in and took report, set up room, and admitted these patients, all the while continuing to mentor/resource her 2 RN orientees and 9 patients. ANNETTE ROCKS!!! She was very supportive to me as charge, and her orientees and the 2 RNs that came in @ 11 am.
We constantly communicated to each other in order to get the tasks done, and not to back up OR and take care of the patients! I could NOT have done it without Annette. She was stepping in constantly to help. I might be on another call and she took all the reports from PACU. We got about 11 patients by 12 noon. Annette was a Huge, Huge, Huge help. I can't thank her enough! She totally went above and beyond busting her bottom running around helping, but yet totally focused and with a positive attitude. And, it wasn't just the 2 RNs that came in @ 11 am that got new surgeries; it was both of the orientees as well. Discharging and admitting in order to have beds available to take the new surgeries. Annette was Super Nurse on 5C; calm, focused, supportive, mentoring and resourceful, pleasant/professional w/new surgery admits.
She was invaluable to me. I truly could not have gotten through the day as smoothly as we did, all because of her Above and Beyond help. But, just so you know, that is how she is! She even saw to it that we both got a lunch break in, late in the day. And, at the end of the day, I was wiped out and put night assignment in, for some reason it left people off. She sat there and popped in the assignment for me, w/out a hitch. Annette Wolfgang deserves to get the Big DAISY Award.
