Annie went above and beyond to assist new parents to fulfill their birth plan, when an insulin dependent mother did not want to be separated from her newborn for routine transitional care. Annie was asked to go to Labor and Delivery to help the mother cup feed her baby so that the infant did not need to use a nipple for the bottle, as well as maintain a normal blood sugar. In the delivery room Annie was helping with monitoring the baby at bedside. She worked closely with the parents, NICU team, and labor and delivery nurses to ensure the infant's blood sugars remained stable and the parents remained comfortable - and more importantly; they were not separated from their baby. Annie performed her assessment as well as all the measurements at bedside. She was also able to show the father how to bathe a newborn so he could give his baby his first bath. Annie remained in the room while the baby continued to warm up and be checked by the NICU team. When the newborn was ready for transfer, Annie then went along with the family to their new room in postpartum. Mommy and daddy were leaving labor and delivery with smiles from ear to ear. In postpartum Annie set up a warmer in the room and continued her teaching with the parents on feeding, infant care, and maintaining a stable blood sugar. Annie stayed with this family 2 hours after her shift was over to make sure the family had everything they needed and the baby was feeding enough to keep a normal blood sugar. Because of her hard work and compassion the parent's birth plan was followed and mother and baby were allowed optimal bonding at a crucial stage.
