Recently a good man ended his struggle with congestive heart failure, pneumonia, and the resulting difficulties of breathing. Annie took care of our grandfather during his final days and she tended to his needs above and beyond the nursing call. Whenever he needed something (whether it was a drink of water, adjusting his oxygen mask, or bringing him some chocolate pudding) she was happy to oblige. Annie also made sure that the family members that were at the hospital with him through the night were taken care of as well. She provided us with information, comforting words, coffee & water, a cot to sleep on, extra blankets, and much more so that we were comfortable while we were with our grandfather.
These situations can be very difficult obviously, but Annie was especially kind, very approachable, compassionate and filled the needs of her patient and his visitors beyond our expectations. She facilitated the handling of our situation and made things much easier. When appropriate she added humor and built a rapport with all of us, quickly earning our trust. She gave her patient and all of us respect and so also earned it for herself easily too.
When our grandfather passed, Annie made sure to give the family the time that they needed to say good-bye to him. When we were ready she helped us to make the appropriate phone calls and saw to it that my grandfather was ready for the funeral home. Annie Porter is a kind and compassionate nurse and human being. We believe that she went past any typical expectations of nurse duties to help to make our grandfather's final days as peaceful and comfortable as she could for him and for his family.
We think that everyone could learn from Annie about how patients and family members should be treated in a hospital during those difficult and emotional times. We would like to say a special thank you to Annie for all of the kindness and caring that she showed us during our grandfather's final days. The compassion that she showed our family was appreciated more than we could ever express.
Thank you Annie for all that you did!!!
