Annie Reed is an incredible caregiver. I was fortunate enough to follow her after one of her nights in the ER. Because of problems with high volumes and bad weather, a very critical patient ended up staying in our ER after cardiac arrest and ROSC. Annie, being one of the few staff members with ICU experience, came in on a night she wasn’t scheduled and cared for the patient. She helped teach other staff what to do and watch for. Even more than that, though, she was able to communicate with the family clearly. The patient's mother was a retired nurse, and it would have been so stressful for her to leave her daughter’s care in the hands of inexperienced nurses. Because Annie was willing to come in and stay for so long, the family saw their daughter receive excellent, competent, compassionate care. Annie explained the lab results, what was happening with the ventilator, and similar things that provided the family some relief in a terrible situation.
