I am pleased to nominate Mr. Tony Pfannenstein who is our Extraordinary Nurse LPN in the 3R PM&R Outpatient clinic. He manifests ICARE and “Can Do” values and attitudes daily as befits his prior Marine Corps training! Tony has a unique capability of putting patients and caregivers at ease when checking them in, getting their vitals, pain levels, and doing medication reviews. He goes above and beyond in assisting our many mobility-impaired veterans into and out of the clinic, safely weighing them and rooming the patients and family or caregivers. He alerts providers of any VS abnormalities or of questions raised by patients or their families to ensure these are acknowledged and addressed. He shares his own veteran experiences and models empathy and caring while explaining clinic procedures to help educate his patients and allay fears. Tony is able to multitask effectively in an environment that routinely involves 3 or 4 different clinics ( PM&R, EMG, Botox, TBI, Stroke) occurring in the same hallway simultaneously. He ensures that each clinic has the appropriate supplies, carts, and patient pre-work to facilitate smooth and efficient operations. Tony ensures that appropriate clinic cleaning procedures are followed without lapse to protect patients and staff. He offers patients Flu and Covid vaccine information proactively and assures that patients have not had vaccines too recently to preclude possible procedures (eg Botox injections for migraine or spasticity). He notifies providers promptly via texting of patient arrivals and will often check to see if a patient can be seen earlier than the scheduled time to further enhance clinic efficiency and patient satisfaction. Mr. Pfannenstein routinely brings his “A” game to work and exemplifies ICARE values that our veterans appreciate. They look forward to seeing his smiling and caring face when they arrive for follow-up care. For the above reasons and more, I believe Tony is a true DAISY Nurse.
