Anthony Vutano, BSN, RN, BCEN

We recently received an email from a Veteran who reached out to the Bay Pines Emergency Department (ED) nurse manager (NM), Anthony "Tony" Vutano, to thank him for a positive experience resulting from their interaction. In the email, the Veteran said, "I wanted to thank you for calling me when you did. Your encouragement got me to go back to the Emergency Room. I told them, as you said, that I knew you. I spent a few days on the psych floor but now I'm in the Substance Addiction Treatment Program (SATP) starting my life over at 68. I'd like to thank you for the part you played in that. They kept asking, "How do I know you?" I did as you said and simply said you were a friend. Again, my sincere thanks for your kindness and encouragement. You sir, are a good man who we could use more of."

Advocacy: Tony empowered the Veteran to return to the Emergency Department and seek help, ultimately leading to admission for psychiatric care and enrollment in the Substance Addiction Treatment Program (SATP). His guidance directly supported the Veteran’s recovery journey.

Respect: Anthony treated the Veteran with dignity and compassion, acknowledging his struggles and offering encouragement that made the Veteran feel valued and understood.

Excellence: Through proactive engagement and empathetic communication, Anthony delivered exceptional service that had a life-changing impact on the Veteran. The Veteran’s heartfelt message reflects the high standard of care Anthony consistently provides.

The Veteran's description of how Tony treated him is just one example of the terrific nurse leader Tony is. Tony treats everyone like this, every day. It is an honor to work with him and my pleasure to nominate him for this award.
