In late Fall, the Burn Unit received a patient who had suffered a traumatic injury resulting in quadriplegia. Initially the patient was disengaged, never wanting to speak with anyone and was always using a blanket to conceal their head. The patient did not want to participate in any activities even though these were so vital for health and wellbeing. That is, until encountering this special nurse, Antoinette, aka "Tonie". Tonie treated the patient like her own family member. She is very patient and allowed full expression of feelings - good or bad. The patient was able to participate in activities because Tonie would be right there alongside. The patient started to engage with other staff members and smiled more often.

In late Winter, the patient underwent surgery and returned to the unit intubated. The patient was very scared. Tonie never left the patient's side the whole shift. The patient was extubated later in the day and became very anxious and often asked for Tonie. As soon as Tonie arrived for her shift the patient stated, "Now it is safe for me to sleep".

The patient was due for a second surgery and Tonie arrived to the unit on her day off to provide reassurance that everything was going to be okay. She was there to address all concerns which helped the patient feel ready to have surgery.

The following are comments made by the patient:

"Tonie always makes me smile."

"When she is here I know my night will be great."

"She makes me feel like I am wanted (valued) by others."

"She let me know that people do care."
